Huddersfield Town | The Nice Surprise

Huddersfield Town began with 2 consecutive victories in The Premier League, winning 6 out of 6 points! On the opening day the David Wagner’s players smashed Crystal Palace 3-0 at Selhurst Park, giving the opponent no chance. Then The Terriers recorded another victory. This time against Newcastle United 1-0 at home.

All the bookmakers considered Huddersfield as a complete underdog before the start of the season. Yes – these two victories don’t guarantee them a security in such a dynamic division as The Premier League, but these wins have surely boosted the Terriers confidence. So, they will probably get used very fast to the life in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

The last time Huddersfield Town played in the English first division was in season 1971-72. Since then, the team has spent the most of the campaigns in the lower tiers of the English football system. On the other hand, the club has a rich history! The Terriers have won the English First Division (now Premier League) on 3 consecutive occasions. The first time they did it was in season 1923-24. In addition, the club has also won the FA Cup once – in 1922. Huddersfield Town have also lots of trophies in the lower divisions and other domestic competitions.

To continue with, the best move of the board of Huddersfield Town was the appointment of the manager David Wagner, who made the unthinkable – promotion to The Premier League last season. The Terriers’ coach saw his team finishing in 5th position of the standings in The Championship and then winning the playoffs to reach “The Promised Land”. Before moving to Huddersfield Town in November 2015, Wagner was in Jurgen Klopp’s staff at Borussia Dortmund and proved he is a good specialist.

Let’s take a closer look to the performance of The Terriers in the first two league matches. Huddersfield showed that they are much better than Crystal Palace in the first match. The Wagner’s men showed a brilliant discipline in defence and managed to find the net on three occasions. The new signing of the team – the striker Steve Mounie bagged two of the goals. He was signed for about 13 million euros from Montpellier. At the age only of 22, he scored 14 goals in The French Ligue 1 last campaign and showed that he is the right man for the position at the top of the Huddersfield attack.

In the second round’s game against Newcastle United, The Terriers took advantage of the many mistakes in the weak Magpies’ defence. One of the key players – the midfielder Aaron Mooy scored with a magnificent shot 5 minutes into the second half of the game.

At both ends, if The Terriers keep on going like that – they will probably avoid relegation in the end of the campaign, which is their main goal. The more time passes the stronger will Huddersfield become as a team! David Wagner has done a wonderful job and if he keeps doing it – I can’t see Huddersfield relegating this season.
